NET ZERO DAY, MALAYSIA PAVILLION

10 DEC 2023 | SUNDAY | 10.00 AM

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,  Good Day, Salam Sejahtera and Salam Malaysia  Madani.

INTRODUCTION

1. It is an absolute honour and pleasure to  stand before you today to deliver this keynote at  the onset of Malaysia Pavilion Net Zero Day.

2. We are all gathered here today to deliberate  on the collective effort you all undertake to drive  the sustainable development and net zero goal  that all of you are embarking on.

Ladies and gentlemen,

3. Over the past ten days at the Conference of  Parties, COP, we have witnessed a convergence  of minds a gathering of local, regional, and  global organisations engaged in compelling and  enlightening discussions. These dialogues are  centred around crucial themes that are paramount to the future and our collective  survival.

4. We have delved into topics that underscore  the very essence of our existence. Among  others, discussions have revolved around  adaptation and resilience. Our conversations  have also underlined the imperative for Nature  and biodiversity conservation.

5. Undoubtedly, a just energy transition has  been at the forefront of our discussions. We are  grappling with ensuring that all sections of our  communities are included as we embark on this  transformative journey.

6. Today, we collectively carry forward this  critical dialogue on transition. There are  multifaceted aspects that demand our attention – from decarbonising high-emitting industries  such as energy and transport to rethinking and  restructuring our supply chains. Equally  significant is the task of preparing our workforce  today and nurturing the green workforce of the  future.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

7. Recognising the need for a holistic and  inclusive approach to addressing climate change  systematically, the government is developing  targeted action-based national policies and a  robust regulatory framework. Our Long-term  Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS)  will chart a clear path toward fulfilling our climate  change commitments and aspirations.  Additionally, we are formulating a National  Climate Change legal framework to strengthen  climate change governance in Malaysia.

8. We have also launched numerous initiatives  to drive sustainable development and green  growth. Through the Green Technology  Financing Scheme, we provide financing  facilitation to companies developing and  implementing green technologies projects. Our  Low Carbon Mobility Masterplan guides electric  vehicle development, reducing the transport  sector's carbon footprint. And the National Low  Carbon Cities Master Plan strengthens  subnational climate action, ensuring the implementation of low-carbon initiatives at the  local level.

9. The government also reckoned that reliable,  affordable, and sustainable energy is the  bedrock of economic growth. We have unveiled  an accelerated renewable energy (RE)  deployment strategy. The government has  recently committed to increasing the target of  RE-installed power capacity to 70% by 2050,  harnessing Malaysia's abundant solar resources  through the more significant deployment of  rooftop solar. Furthermore, we are pioneering  an electricity exchange for cross-border RE  trading, advancing the realisation of the ASEAN  Power Grid initiative.

10. These efforts shall present new economic  opportunities while ensuring a secure electricity  supply for all, especially businesses.

Ladies and gentlemen,

11. Let me take this opportunity to also share  and invite all of you to the International  Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) is the annual trade  event for green technologies and eco solutions  spearheaded by the Ministry of Natural  Resources, Environment & Climate Change.

12. The IGEM organised by Greentech Malaysia  has, over the past 14 years, successfully  generated close to US$ 10 billion in business  leads since its initiation in 2010. To date, it has  attracted over 580,000 visitors, including  delegates, dignitaries and companies from over  112 countries.

13. For the upcoming edition, we target over  US$ 1 billion in business leads with 480  exhibition booths, 48,000 visitors and  participation from 48 countries. We will be  showcasing fast-emerging technologies that will  shape the future of a sustainable planet and  global economy. This shall be coupled with the  host of eminent international speakers who will  participate in conferences, dialogues and discourse sessions on trends, technologies,  transitions, transformations and talent that will  drive the efforts towards a net zero future.

14. Let me invite all of you to join us in IGEM  2024 as we garner momentum from COP 28 to  further our collective efforts.

Ladies and gentlemen,

15. Last but not least, I look forward to the  discourse we will have today and the joint effort  that will be developed through these  interactions. We must acknowledge that  achieving net zero is not merely a desire but a  collective responsibility incumbent upon us all.

16. Each of us here and beyond these walls  holds the power to make a difference. Let us  unite and work towards a sustainable future for  ourselves and future generations.

17. With that, I thank you for your attention.

Wabillahitaufik Walhidayah Wassalamualaikum  Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
